Some good news for those of you who are wanting to get back to the lake and float your boat – from 9th July, you are welcome to do so!
We’ve agreed with Sedgemoor District Councils Health and Safety Team a Covid-19 Policy and Risk Assessment.
Download the policy here: SMBC Covid 19 Policy & Risk Assessment (July 2020)
What this means for you to use the lake as an individual?
Firstly, please use this link and make sure that you understand the possible impacts to yourself and others; and that you are able to follow the Government guidelines;
You will also be expected to comply with all of the actions we have documented in the clubs own Covid-19 Policy
We must limit the number attending club meetings to 6 so you will not be able to use the lake during any club meetings, the dates/times are listed below.
Please do not be tempted to just turn up and plonk your boat in the corner of the lake. You will be asked to leave by the meeting OOD, and if you refuse to do so you will find yourself subject to club disciplinary measures and your membership may be terminated. This is because we must be extremely strict on the number of members on site at any time.
Outside of the meeting times (see dates below) you are free to use the lake at any other time, although I would suggest avoiding the park at weekends 1pm to 4pm as it gets quite busy if the weather is nice.
Club meetings and pre-booking;
Put your 2020 club boating calendar in the bin! For the near future we will be holding “causal club meetings” with no competitions. We have divided these meeting into 4 sections so you are using the lake with other members with similar models. Details on these plus the dates/times are listed below, as usual these will be held on Sunday mornings but starting 9.30am and Wednesday evenings starting 6.30pm for 2 hours. There are a few SYS meetings being held 4pm to 6pm.
You must pre-book to attend these meetings. – Government restrictions mean we can only hold gatherings of a maximum of 6 persons.
There is no perfect way to do this but we decided upon drawing lots should there be more than 6 who wish to attend. There will need to be a person(s) on the list who will not be drawn as we must have someone who is on the Rescue Boat User list/key holder and someone willing and able to assist with the dinghy.
The booking system works as follows;
1. Contact the Clubs Secretary Russ Chilcott via email; firstname.lastname@example.org or mobile 07721 511314 (evenings) stating which meeting(s) you wish to attend.
2. Your bookings must be placed at least 24 hours before the meeting.
3. If more than 6 booked to attend a single meeting the names will be drawn by lot. All those who booked will be contacted at least 12 hours before the meeting to confirm they have been drawn to attend or not. Do not turn up unless it has been confirmed that you are on the list.
4. If you were not drawn to attend and there were no more than 12 who had previously booked you will be on the list to attend the next meeting for the same section. I will confirm this with you. If more than 12 booked those not listed will be drawn, though I think this is unlikely to happen.
5. You may attend as many meetings as you wish for one or more sections but you must use the appropriate model. ie; do not bring a FE boat to a IOM meeting!
I hope all above makes sense. In time the limit of 6 may be amended by the government and then we may not require any pre-booking, but this is the way it has to happen for now.
These will be “causal meetings”, do not expect any formal competitions or racing for any section, it’s not safe or practical to do so, and obviously not fair on anyone who is not drawn to attend!
We are starting with SYS for the simple reason the last meeting we held was the Alice Trophy for IOM’s back in March!
The 4 sections are;
SYS = Small Yachts (as defined on the club website)
IOM = International One Metre class Yachts
FE – Fast Electric racing boats plus any “fast” scale models
Scale/other – scale models, scale sail and any others not listed above.

9.30am to 11.30am Sun 2nd August – IOM
6.30pm to 8.30om Weds 5th August – FE

These meetings dates will be extended further beyond 2nd Sept, some sections may have more meetings than others dependent upon the attendance for each one. The Council have kindly agreed to allowing us to setup temporary cordoned areas for you to operate your model away from the public, this will include one of two launch platforms. Within this cordon we will have several hand sanitizer dispensers, spray disinfectant, disposable masks and gloves available.
The Committee with the help of the Council have worked hard to get this in place to the point where we feel comfortable to resume some limited boating at Apex. Hopefully, you will be able to enjoy some time at the lake once again, it’s not going the same for a while but this is better than nothing.
