We had 14 entries for the 3rd round of the winter series, with members from Dartmoor, Yeovil, Woodspring, Poole, North Devon and Windrush clubs making the trip to the Apex Park, Burnham-on-Sea. The host club, Sedgemoor was fairly well represented with 6 skippers plus the OOD Scott Smart.
Scott set a long triangle/sausage course with a gate at the leeward end and the finish line using the windward marker. Thankfully the wind stayed with us coming in from the south/southwest at around 12mph it was pretty constant (for Apex!) and actually got slightly stronger by the 21st and last race.
Racing got underway on time at 10am, with 2 skippers off the water each time as RO’s leaving a dozen to battle it out. Tony Edwards set the early pace winning Race 1 but didn’t have it all his own way as the two “Richards”, Richard Aucott and Craig Richards took the next 4 between them. After a coffee break things then fell into a familiar pattern with the Green Machines of Tony and Craig often having their own battle away up front with rest racing for 3rd. Only Mike Cooke and Richard Will were able to steal a win from the pair for the rest of the meeting.
Craig had a run of 3 wins from his last 4 races but it was not quite enough to catch Tony who with 8 wins won this round on a score of 24. Craig took 2nd place on 29. Local skipper Richard A was the best of the rest nicking 3rd place on 54, ahead of Mike 4th on 56 and Richard W 5th on 64. I was very happy with 6th on 66, but now wondering if changing my name to include a “Richard” might help!
Unfortunately my laptop battery decided suddenly to die as I was inputting the last few results! So Scott and I had to revert back to using pen, paper and the grey stuff between our ears – we got it mostly right but at the time awarded Mike 3rd when it should have been Richard A. Sorry Richard, a bottle of wine will be coming your way soon.
Thanks to Scott who kept things moving along nicely and enabled us to have a very enjoyable days racing. Sorry for keeping the skippers waiting at the end, (best laid plans and all that) – a new laptop battery is on order now!
The 4th and final round of this series takes place at Poole on Sun 9th Feb.
